Silver Diamine Fluoride
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a silver-fluoride substance that effectively prevents and significantly slows tooth decay. SDF is used on patients with decay that they do not want to or aren't ready to treat through other methods.
Who would choose to have SDF applied?
- Children with decay in their primary teeth that will be naturally falling out soon
- Older adults who expect to have dentures in the future
- SDF may be applied to a tooth where a crown is being placed to protect it further
- Anyone who has decay that they are not ready to treat with fillings or other treatments for a variety of reasons
It is important to note that SDF is not a permanent solution. The area of decay will eventually need to be treated fully in order to protect the tooth. This is why it is a more obvious solution for individuals who will be losing the decayed tooth in the future.
SDF is painted onto a tooth where decay exists. SDF turns the decay area black but does not color any healthy tooth structure. If SDF touches skin it will temporarily stain the area until naturally wearing off.
